I have been looking to buy a hat for quite some time now. I really got inspired after seeing all photos from the well dressed gentlemen at this year’s Pitti Uomo in Florence. At this season’s Pitti Uomo attendees, gave us a class on how to pull off a hat. Formal brimmed hats were well represented among the visitors. I looked to find a classic, timeless hat that could work with the rest of my wardrobe. After some considerations I decided to go for a navy Fedora hat. The range of hats in Malmö is not that large, so after some googling around on the internet and research on Instagram, I found a company named “Tonak” based in the Czech Republic that has a wide range of affordable hats.
Tonak is one of the largest and most prominent manufacturers of headwear with over 200 years of experience, The comapny is based in the Czech Republic with productions sites both in Novy Jicin and Strakonice. The Company offers a wide range of millinery products, specializing on felt hats, hat bodies and knitted headwear. The plant in Novy Jicin specializes in manufacturing woolen and fur felt hat bodies and hats. The production of knitted headwear, namely berets, fezzes, hoods, and woolen hats, takes place in the manufacturing facility located in Strakonice. In addition, the plant facility specializes in yarn production.
Tonak’s recently launched their Flagship Store at Žatecká street 14, in the immediate vicinity of Pařížská Street, the most prestigious shopping address in Prague. Apart from their stores, Tonak also offers online sales through their website (link to website).
A fedora is a felt hat with a wide brim and indented crown. It is typically creased lengthwise down the crown and “pinched” near the front on both sides. (Fedoras can also be creased with teardrop crowns, diamond crowns, center dents, and others, and the positioning of pinches can vary.) The typical crown height is 4.5 inches (11 cm). Fedoras have a wide brim (smaller-sized-brim hats are called trilbies), the brim is usually approximately 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) wide, but may be wider, can be left “raw edged”, finished with a sewn overwelt or underwelt, or bound with a trim-ribbon.
The term fedora was in use as early as 1891. Its popularity ascended, and eventually it passed the similar-looking Homburg hat in popularity. The word fedora comes from the title of an 1882 play by dramatist Victorien Sardou, Fédora, being written for Sarah Bernhardt. Princess Fédora, the heroine of the play, wore a center-creased, soft brimmed hat. The hat was fashionable for women, and the women’s rights movement adopted it as a symbol. After Prince Edward of Britain started wearing them in 1924, it became popular among men for its stylishness and its ability to protect the wearer’s head from the wind and weather.
Tonak offers a wide range of Fedora hats, in different styles, materials and colors. I chose their Felt hat model 11759/14 (product page). The price for this hat is 104€ which is a good prices compared to the other manufacturers on the market. The model is a navy felt hat with a leather sweatband and lining, trimmed with a hat ribbon. The width of the brim is 7 cm.
Now it’s time to start looking for a Panama Hat for this summer, maybe this one from Tonak can be an option… =)
